My Humanitarian and Charitable Work

For more than four decades, I have been actively involved in humanitarian and charitable activities across several countries. My mission has always been to support vulnerable communities by providing assistance in the areas of education, healthcare, food relief, clean water, and emergency disaster response.

Since 1985, I have spent more than USD 160 million on humanitarian and charitable activities around the world — supporting projects in education, healthcare, disaster relief, food assistance, clean drinking water, and other essential humanitarian causes.

I played an active role in humanitarian relief efforts following the devastating earthquakes in 2005 and 2008. During these emergencies, I provided approximately 5,000 tents to displaced families, distributed food supplies, and delivered other essential relief items to those affected. I also supported education and healthcare initiatives by helping needy families with medical treatment, medicines, and educational assistance.

10. In summary

Across more than forty years in business, Mayier Jiang has consistently returned the proceeds of enterprise to society — supporting the armed forces, ethnic unity, education, disaster relief and healthcare. Rooted in the border region and devoted to his country, he is regarded as a model among ethnic-minority entrepreneurs and a leading figure in patriotic philanthropy.

The Eagle of the Pamirs

帕米尔雄鹰 — 马依尔江

In contemporary China there is an entrepreneur who has navigated global markets with unusual commercial skill, and who has become, through a fierce patriotism and a deep sense of social responsibility, an advocate of ethnic unity, a supporter of the armed forces and a leader in charitable work. He is Mayier Jiang, a Tajik business figure who came down from the Pamir Plateau.

He was born on 20 April 1968 in Tashkurgan Autonomous County, on the Pamir Plateau in the Kashgar region of Xinjiang. His devotion to the frontier forces grew out of childhood. Tashkurgan is regularly struck by blizzards and other natural disasters, and each time it was the border troops who risked their lives to bring relief supplies to ordinary people. He never forgot that debt, and gratitude turned into action.

Four decades at the frontier

From 1985 onwards he has visited border troops without a break. Before every major festival he leads his staff, loaded with supplies and gifts, to units stationed across Xinjiang. Some posts are so remote that vehicles cannot reach them; for those he has organised camel trains, crossing mountains of 4,000 to 6,000 metres to place supplies in the soldiers’ hands. He has given books to units, built camp libraries, and donated multimedia and office automation equipment to meet their needs.

Beyond material support, he has created employment for veterans. In 2012 he invested 30 million yuan to establish Urumqi Zhongpa Taxi Co., creating 500 jobs. Most of the drivers are former soldiers and more than sixty per cent are from ethnic minorities. He understood that only a stable job could truly secure their livelihoods and help them re-enter civilian life.

Education, and changing fate through knowledge

Education is one of his central concerns. He has visited schools in the harshest conditions across Xinjiang and has sponsored more than 4,000 university students from poor families. He established a scholarship foundation at Xinjiang University that each year distributes grants to students at several institutions. He has also been invited to lecture at universities, telling the story of his own start in business to encourage students to change their futures through learning.

To go further, he spent over 20 million yuan building a 9,600 m² modern multi-purpose primary school in Kumumaili Village, Lianmuqin Town, Shanshan County. It accommodates more than 1,000 students from five nearby townships and is now in use. He also funded a kindergarten in Ya’an, Sichuan, covering 4.5 mu with a floor area of 1,100 m², likewise now open.

Lifting families out of poverty

He has long followed the circumstances of poor farming and herding households in Xinjiang and the XPCC, helping through donations and industrial support. Over forty years more than 30,000 households across the region have been helped towards prosperity. He founded a poverty-alleviation trading company to help young Tajik people start businesses, supported youth football teams, and donated cars, televisions and computers to county government to improve local conditions.

First to arrive when disaster strikes

In the face of natural disaster he has always moved quickly. He gave 1.84 million yuan in cash and goods after the Wenchuan earthquake. After the Ya’an earthquake he donated 1.5 million yuan to build a school — among the largest individual donations in the country — and travelled to the disaster zone himself. He brought nearly 920,000 yuan in cash and supplies to Yutian County. When his own home county of Tashkurgan was struck he gave 1.25 million yuan in cash and 500,000 yuan in relief goods, and helped transport the injured, pay medical bills and cook hot meals. After the Jiashi earthquake he had shelters built within 72 hours. Throughout, he has held to the principle of “no distinction of ethnicity, only of need”.

Medicine close to home

In healthcare, the Mayier Jiang Charity Hospital he funded at Youth Farm in Yining County has improved a grassroots system that lacked modern equipment, easing the difficulty of getting treatment for local farmers and herders. In the Mayier Jiang Loving Care Ward at the Xinjiang Occupational Disease Hospital, more than a thousand children of many ethnicities born with congenital heart disease have been treated at his expense, and every operation has succeeded. With the hospital now on their doorstep, the long journey in search of treatment has become a thing of the past.

Culture, and horses

He has supported cultural outreach online and on the road, sponsoring a “mobile online bazaar” programme that donated four multi-purpose roadshow vehicles to four prefectures in southern Xinjiang — opening a window onto modern culture for people at the grassroots. To meet a long-held wish of his home community and to support Chinese horse breeding, he spent 5 million yuan importing Arabian, English and Turkmen horses, letting local people see world-class stock while beginning a breeding programme intended to serve equestrian sport nationally.

Honours as a call to begin again

His work has been widely recognised: National Model for Supporting the Military; the China Youth Entrepreneurship Award; the China Charity Award as a Model of Compassion; the National Award for Ethnic Youth Unity and Progress; Star of Public Welfare; Outstanding Figure in Public Welfare; member of the All-China Youth Federation; Autonomous Region Outstanding Builder of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics; Advanced Individual for Ethnic Unity; XPCC Outstanding Builder; Xinjiang Outstanding Young Entrepreneur; one of Urumqi’s Top Ten Outstanding Young People. His American company received an industry leadership award in 2019, and in 2024 he was named a Global Chinese Role Model in the “Same Roots, Same Dream” programme. He has been appointed Honorary Professor at both Xinjiang University and Xinjiang Normal University.

For Mayier Jiang, honours are a signal to set out again. The entrepreneur who came down from the Pamir Plateau holds to a belief in ethnic unity and national stability — his original purpose, like the eagle of the high plateau, still turned toward home.
